PCT2023|It’s The Time to Start(0-42mi, March 5th to 7th)

Flew from Taiwan to LA, then took bus and train to San Diego, everything for me is new and the first experience. Now I am standing here! Campo, 0 mile!

It’s really an unusual year, the weather, the snow……everything’s totally different from the past. The snow is a double-edged sword, it brings the cool temperature, the water, the flowers and the hope to the desert, but it also makes the damage and stops the hikers from hiking.

In the first 30mi, I felt so excited while hiking, but when I approached 32mi and hiked on the snow, it seems like everything went tough, I had to pull my leg out of the snow many times and it made my movement slow down.

Everyone stoped at Laguna Mountain Lodge and tried to figure out the the next plan. Then, someone showed up. Jenna, a trail angel, could carry all the hikers toward Julian to rest, it’s better than waiting here without the accommodation. Thanks for this trail magic.

I worked the East Side of the Sierra along the Yosemite boundary as a Wilderness Ranger in 1983, following a record snow year. That year, the backcountry never really opened up due to snow until about labor day. Trails and signs were buried, travel was tough. There is more snow this year. Be prepared and be careful.

Everything will be fine and the snow melts a lot now.
