Alas, The Snake Shack. How it got its name I may never know the truth but I like to believe its infamous for hiding rattle snakes. Lucky for us we saw none and made it our siesta spot for the middle of the day. We laid our bodies in this shack to stay out of the sun and 110°F heat. After a few hours in the shack I laid in a hammock in the little shade we had nearby until it got cooler. Then we hiked the evening till midnight over 18 miles of up and down hiking with no available water. Its better to hike in the evening because it gets dangerous and exhausting to hike in the middle of the day. The sun gives little to no shade from the low brush and skinny trees. . . . I filtered my own water from a trickling spring near here that I had to wait over 45 minutes in a queue of other thruhikers getting their water for the long strech as well. It took almost 15 minutes to fill up my 5 liters. This was almost a daily process while hiking in the desert. It all revolves around the water.??

This day sucked. I was making great time until I wandered down the wrong trail for 2 miles and 1.5k feet. As if that wasnt bad enough the trail had handfuls of blowdowns and wash outs. I pushed hard to get back up to the trail junction and was now 2 hours behind. When I arrived at camp there was nowhere to camp so I pushed on again. The sun was setting and the clouds were rolling it. I got caught on a pass in thick fog and it was getting dark quick. I ended up running downhill, racing the fading light and trying to get below the exposed ridgeline. Needless to say it was a long day, I think it ended up being a 39 mile day with 14k feet of elevation gain. #sunset #pacificcresttrail #pct16 #pacificcresttrials #rei1440project #pct #thruhike

I said I wouldn’t post my Boarder pic till my miles were finished but I’m proud of it & it took a lot to get there. Unfortunately I decided I needed to throw in the towel on my Flip-Flop this season…I had to hop off trail for a few days after Washington & got hit pretty hard with rain on the way out. While I was off trail I watched massive weather system after weather system hit Nor-Cal & the Upper NW dumping rain & snow over the last 2 weeks. I kept seeing reports of hikers getting rescued or missing. It basically came down to me not feeling safe going back out there headed SOBO Alone & with 1 good arm. I’m bumbed about it but there will always be another hiking season!! It’s time to start making plans for 2017 #getoutside #camping #traillife #washingtonstate #rei1440project #rei #pct #pacificcresttrail #pacificcresttrials #mountains #hiking #hikertrash #optoutside #getoutstayout #bpmag #adventure #explore #exploreeverything #disableyourlimits #everytrailconnects
