Thru-hiking season is in full throttle on the #PCT! And there are some great photos floating around thanks to all the hikers out there! Unfortunately, if you are reading this right now, you probably aren’t out on the trail (thanks for reading if you are!). Good news, this is the next best thing!
If you’d like to be featured, we search Instagram for great photos with the hashtag #PacificCrestTrail, #PCT and #PacificCrestTrials (our personal favorite) and select a few standouts each week for your viewing pleasure.
Here’s some visual splendor chock full of the insta-greatness we have all been waiting for. The following photos were taken between 10/28 and 11/4.
Raw. That is how I would describe this trail community as a collective. You see the good, the bad and the ugly of your fellow hiker trash, yet you still find them to be the most amazing and resilient humans. It’s this honesty, realness and truthfulness to oneself and others that makes me appreciate each individual on the trail. These connections bring me genuine happiness. Attempting to acclimate to what we call society, these qualities are all being challenged once again. My faith in humanity is dangling on a string. The trail is the only thing that gives me a reason to hold on.
Day 126/153: the day we left Mt Jefferson behind and caught our first glimpse of Mt. Hood. Got amazing morning trail magic from Shades & Pogo (egg & bacon sandwiches! bacon fried steak strips! fresh pressed coffe! fruit! beer!) and took a huge stop at Olallie lake (doritos! more beer!) but still managed to pull a 33 mile day until we reached our kinda depressing camp site at warm springs river. We hiked with Raven and Fuego, which is always great! #pacificcrestthursday #pacificcresttrials #pctig
Alas, The Snake Shack. How it got its name I may never know the truth but I like to believe its infamous for hiding rattle snakes. Lucky for us we saw none and made it our siesta spot for the middle of the day. We laid our bodies in this shack to stay out of the sun and 110°F heat. After a few hours in the shack I laid in a hammock in the little shade we had nearby until it got cooler. Then we hiked the evening till midnight over 18 miles of up and down hiking with no available water. Its better to hike in the evening because it gets dangerous and exhausting to hike in the middle of the day. The sun gives little to no shade from the low brush and skinny trees. . . . I filtered my own water from a trickling spring near here that I had to wait over 45 minutes in a queue of other thruhikers getting their water for the long strech as well. It took almost 15 minutes to fill up my 5 liters. This was almost a daily process while hiking in the desert. It all revolves around the water.??
This day sucked. I was making great time until I wandered down the wrong trail for 2 miles and 1.5k feet. As if that wasnt bad enough the trail had handfuls of blowdowns and wash outs. I pushed hard to get back up to the trail junction and was now 2 hours behind. When I arrived at camp there was nowhere to camp so I pushed on again. The sun was setting and the clouds were rolling it. I got caught on a pass in thick fog and it was getting dark quick. I ended up running downhill, racing the fading light and trying to get below the exposed ridgeline. Needless to say it was a long day, I think it ended up being a 39 mile day with 14k feet of elevation gain. #sunset #pacificcresttrail #pct16 #pacificcresttrials #rei1440project #pct #thruhike
yesterday I was having a conversation about why #winterhiking the Continental Divide would be great. this morning I’m looking at pictures of my #pacificcresttrail hike and wondering why I come up with such dumb ideas • #pacificcresttrials #johnmuirtrail #sierras #nobo #pct2016 #wildernessculture #optoutside #embracethebrutality #thruhike #PCTig
Never will I forget the beauty, the people, the weather, the food, the pain, the fun…all those happy and hard hours, days and month spent hiking the PCT. I for sure will get back on a trail. Now is the time to figure out the next adventure, during a 10 hour flight back to Germany :). . . #pct #pctig #hikethepct #pacificcresttrials #pacificcresttrail2016 #thruhike #mexicotocanada #whyihike #bestdayeverydayalways #campfire_lifestyle #welove_mountain #the_trvlr #backpacking #travelbyfoot #traveldifferently #travelusa #travelmyusa #wandern #wanderlust #instatraveling #instabackpacker #autumncolors #washington #hiking
I said I wouldn’t post my Boarder pic till my miles were finished but I’m proud of it & it took a lot to get there. Unfortunately I decided I needed to throw in the towel on my Flip-Flop this season…I had to hop off trail for a few days after Washington & got hit pretty hard with rain on the way out. While I was off trail I watched massive weather system after weather system hit Nor-Cal & the Upper NW dumping rain & snow over the last 2 weeks. I kept seeing reports of hikers getting rescued or missing. It basically came down to me not feeling safe going back out there headed SOBO Alone & with 1 good arm. I’m bumbed about it but there will always be another hiking season!!
