Winter on Katahdin
As we gear up for the PCT we are still enjoying day hikes this winter. Last weekend we hiked Mount Katahdin (the tallest mountain in Maine at 5,269 ft and the northern terminus of the AT), roughly a 17.5 mile round trip. Starting at Abol Bridge, we made our way to the Abol Campground to check in with the ranger there, and then headed up the Abol Trail to the Tableland. Although views off the mountain were limited today, the mountain itself is always breathtaking.
But what does winter hiking have to do with hiking the PCT?
Preparation
Winter hiking is great! You can step out of your comfort zone by hiking in unfavorable weather, braving snow and wind, and safely navigating your way down a mountain. But the key is to do it prepared! Baxter State Park provides a helpful list of recommended gear for venturing above the tree line, ensuring you’re ready for the adventure. Check it out here: Baxter State Park Winter Basics.
Layering
Winter hiking provides great practice in mastering the art of layering and delayering. Managing sweat is crucial during ascents as overheating can leave you damp and vulnerable to the cold, increasing the risk of hypothermia later on.
PCT Conditions
The Pacific Crest Trail is known for its unpredictable weather and temperature changes, so it’s important to know your body’s needs and get familiar with layering to stay safe and comfortable.
Conclusion
We love spending time in the backcountry during winter and hope you can safely enjoy it too, whether it’s for training or simply getting out as you gear up for your next big adventure!
Hiking Mount Katahdin is always demanding, deeply rewarding, and leaves us happily exhausted when we return home. Here are some photos from last year’s trip up Mount Katahdin, where we faced a windchill of -40°F!
