Planning…mapping your way

Traveling without a planned route allows you to reach some place, but not the place you want!   Therefore, use a map to help you reach your intended destination!

I came across a fantastic mapping app recently while planning and preparing for my upcoming AT Thru Hike.  It’s NOT a normal mapping app because it’s 3D!  Yes, a visual map for the hills I will encounter as I hike and it has been eye opening.

GeoFlyer’s North America 3D map app is great at giving a realistic view of the hike.  What is great about the app is that the AT Shelters and the Centerline Trail is included and visual!  You can virtually walk the trail on your phone.

Additionally, it allows you to add your own markers/POIs and make notes!   After using Wiki Trails to help me plan my hike with town stops, water stops and camp/shelters, I found that I could add these key locations to the GeoFlyers map allowing me to further plan my hike.

Finally, it allows you to route your hike.  While it sometime takes the least distance (along roadways), I just shortened the points and that helped.  Best part of this feature is that it gives you the distance and elevation profile….nice!

For those looking for FREE tools to help plan your hoke, you have to check out this app and site.
