Raider’s Fanny Pack : Toiletries And More

Up the trail, the sun glimmered off an iridescent waist, rainbow reflections hitting the dirt path. Grown-out blonde hair tucked loosely into a bun. A stray stand comes loose in the soft breeze.  A tuck behind the ear, and a quick zip, suddenly AWOL pages emerged from her hand. The leaves fanning from side to side as if to say ,’This way, please come this way!” and all in slow motion, of course.

Do you have visions of being the dream vixen of the trail? Where your name precedes you as you go? And hikers run from shelters just to get a glimpse of you? Then look no further. Here are all the tools you need to aid in your success. Or if you are just curious how little you need in terms of toiletries and electronics, well, that works too.

When I was a baby SOBO, I had a lot of sh*t. We all do initially. Part of the magic of the AT is realizing how little you can function with.

I present my list of toiletries and electronics that got me through the trail. Starting with the fashion accessory that amplifies your hiker status.

Iridescent waist, see what I mean?

  • The Fanny Pack
  • GoPro Hero 5
  • Headphones
  • AT patch (when I didn’t feel like explaining to day-hikers what I was doing out there, I could just point to it)
  • Chapstick (only lost it three times)
  • Headlamp
  • Wallet
  • AWOL Guidebook pages w/ pencil
  • Chic-A-Fil sauce (better than money on the trail)
  • Eye drops
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Lighter
  • Hometown pride stickers
  • Lucky dime acquired in Manchester Center from strange lady
  • Ibuprofen, Benadryl
  • Swiss army knife with keychain (aids in not losing it)
  • iPhone 6 (not shown)
  • Anker battery phone case (not shown)
  • Dual USB port wall plug in (get one at a gas station, cheaper than online), with GoPro cord and iPhone cord

Toiletry Bag From My Pack

  • Medical tape, one Band-Aid (I actually don’t recommend bringing any, you rarely ever need them)
  • Zit cream (found at Dollar General, huge help for awful chin breakouts from the constant heat)
  • Antibacterial ointment
  • Diva cup – yes, it works and you will never go back
  • Body glide
  • Cottonelle wipes
  • Yes to Tomatoes Face Wipes
  • Hairbrush
  • Microfiber Pack towel – XS
  • Bobby pins (two)
  • Johnson & Johnson Baby powder
  • Tweezers
  • Nail clippers
  • Toothpaste
  • Toothbrush
  • White strips (split these with your trail besties at Dollar General)
  • Retainer and case
  • Floss stick
  • Ouchless clear hair-tie (two)
  • Dr bronners castile soap (in travel spray bottle, not shown)
  • KT tape strips
  • Bug spray (not shown, used July through September. Get 100 percent deet; it is not a luxury item)
  • Sea to Summit bag

So when you meet your dream hiking counterpart, dump that baby powder all over you, thrown in some bobby pins, and thank me later.
