Scout and Frodo Will Host PCT Hikers in San Diego in Spring 2021

Scout and Frodo, who have given shelter to hundreds of PCT thru-hikers on their way to the Southern Terminus in California since 2006, will resume hosting in 2021.

The couple—Barney and Sandy Mann—said earlier that 2020 would be their last year of hosting. In March, because of COVID-19, they closed their San Diego home to hikers.

Now they say it’s too soon to end their long ride.

“Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, 2020 was not our LAST year of hosting, it was our LOST year of hosting.  Consequently…..drum roll, please…. we plan to host PCT hikers in the spring of 2021! Of course this is contingent upon it being safe to do so.  We really don’t want to end our hosting career on such a low note.  So we hope that many of you who had planned to stay with us this past spring will still have the opportunity to hike the PCT and be hosted by us,” they said on their website, sandiegopct.com.

“In 2021 we will host hikers from Thursday March 18 to Sunday May 23. If your permit is for a date before March 19 or after May 23, see the information on our “Public Transit” page.”

But to be sure, Scout and Frodo said 2021 would be their last year.

“2021 will be our final year of hosting, after 15 years of helping PCT hikers get a good start. Not an easy decision. We want to end while we’re still enjoying it. There is life outside our PCT work, after all, and there is our first grandson….”
