Stories from the Trail: Second Chance Hiker

Long-distance hiking is hard enough when you’re a little overweight. Hard, but not impossible. After all, look at how many people use thru-hiking as a way to do just that. I, for example, needed to lose 20. (I accidentally lost 47, but that’s another story.) Cory, aka Second Chance Hiker, is trying to lose a whole lot more than that: 200 pounds. That’s a whole person.

Which, if you think about it, is what he’s trying to do. Not just lose weight, but to become a whole new person. By taking on the PCT, Cory is not only challenging himself, he’s inspiring everyone who thought he couldn’t. When he called Stories From The Trail last month he was on his way up San Jacinto, where at the time it was snowing pretty hard. About halfway through our call we thought his signal was gone for good, but much to our surprise (and delight!) he relocated and called right back because he’s just that excited to share his stories!

Now, nearly 300 miles, in he’s become a YouTube sensation and it’s easy to see why. He’s perpetually cheerful, amazed by the little things, and just crazy enough that he might even make it. Second Chance was recently Backpacker Radio’s “Featured Thru Hiker of the Week,” and we are happy to share with you our call with Second Chance Hiker. Listen wherever you get great podcasts, or right here!

Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. Eastern Stories From The Trail hosts and records a Hiker Hangout, and you are invited. Each week someone interesting has a story to tell and all you have to do is listen. Join us on Discord to hear the show live (link below).
