The Best Commercial Dehydrated Dinners [Reader’s Poll]

A couple weeks back, we asked for your input on which commercial dehydrated dinners were your favorites.  The results are in.

Before revealing the vote totals, I’d like to acknowledge the inherent flaw of posing a general public poll asking for people’s favorite meals, which is, there’s going to be a bias toward the more popular brands (i.e. those which big chain retailers / outfitters carry).  People will only vote for the meals which they’ve tried and many have only tried what’s carried at REI, EMS, Cabelas, etc.  And to say that the big box retailers only carry the best is far from the truth (anyone who’s purchased Alpine Aire Southwestern Style Masa from REI knows this firsthand). We recognize this and will be putting together a controlled “study” soon which will try and account for this error (and likely create a slew of new issues).

That said, with 130 votes, the results of this survey are far from meaningless, and can give you a great starting point of where to allocate your precious dollars when shopping for your next backcountry outing. The top three winners are below, with the full results of the poll beneath that.

Without further ado…

Gold – Mountain House Beef Stroganoff

Silver – Mountain House Biscuits and Gravy

Bronze – Good to Go Thai Curry

I agree the Mountain House Buscuits and Gravy is a solid Silver Medal finisher. My favorite dehydrate breakfast is making breakfast burritos using the Mountain House Scrambled Egg & Bacon. I bring along a 10-12 count package of (six inch) tortillas and some fast food salsa packets. Two hikers can each get 4 to 5 (respectably sized) burritos each from just one dehyrate package (saving some precious $$ too).

While I haven’t gone straight up Mountain House B&G, I have mixed their biscuits and gravy with dried bread cubes (leftover baguette), gravy packet, and sausage crumbles for pretty tasty gourmet trail food breakfast results – dang good!
