The Open Letter to Kat Tracks

Location : Sugarloaf Shores, FL

Kat, when we met, you mentioned your pack was down to 26 items.

May I ask for a packing list of the items you determined you absolutely, positively could not live without?

I walked some 10 miles yesterday, much of that with Harmonica — often at Harmonica’s youthful pace … tho’ he might quibble about the characterization of “often”.  😏

By the end of the day, 1700, my middle back was killing me.  I don’t know of it was the distance, the speed, or simply my recent injury saying hello, but I had to stop.

This morning, I packed differently than yesterday’s load out.

  • My clothing sack is somewhat low in the bag (pelvis area), against my spine.  Yes, it’s clothing, but the when compressed in the heavy 420D dry bag, it’s heavy — and dense.
  • My cook kit is balanced on either hip, eg, Windburner left, 1# isobutane tank right.
  • On top of the clothing bag is a lightweight 30D dry bag with medications and my fleece … rain is forecast throughout the day.
  • Dehydrated food and miscellaneous items, eg, Sawyer Picaridin, left over Skittles, lots of nicotine gum (long story), and TP.

Please send your packing list — even if from memory, and critique my items — packing list is posted on the site.  Be ruthless.

Thanks … HW
