The Thru Project: A Photographic Journey

TTP_Cover_No_Text

Hello everyone!

I’m Joshua Niven; Asheville based artist and Appalachian Trail thru-hiker. In March 2013, I embarked on a northbound hike with a few buddies to accomplish my dream of turning a thru hike into a photographic project with the end goal of creating a book encompassing the entire journey. The name of the production is The Thru Project.

I started section hiking the Appalachian Trail years ago. The forced meditation of countless hours walking with my thoughts altered my mind, helped focus the purpose of my life and the meaning behind my artwork. These walks in the woods guided my life and ultimately left me with a desire to create artwork during a thru hike that would inspire and express my reverence for The Appalachian Trail.

It seemed simple, two missions: hike the entirety of the AT and capture the essence of the hike and my surroundings through the lens of my camera. I thought it would just be hard work, wake up walk capture repeat, a constant battle between walking, carrying and capturing; I was mistaken. Internal struggles, identity crisis, people, relationships, money, and other unexpected elements would re-direct my hike, my mind and my images.

The assumptions of such a journey are endless and our individual experiences so unique. Like many thru hikers my journey across The Appalachian Trail was life altering and provided me with lessons that I could have never predicted.

After three years in the making The Thru Project has been completed.

I am excited to have the privilege of sharing my work with you; trail devotees and Appalachian Trials followers. In honor of this occasion, I have put together a preview of the 15k pictures taken during my hike, straight from The Thru Project Book, including never before seen imagery- fresh for the Appalachian Trials audience!

Thank you and enjoy!
