Baxter

Short for Baxter State Park, home of Mount Katahdin. Hikers will sometimes refer to “Baxter” the same way they refer to “Katahdin,” although in my experience, the word most often surfaces in discussions of the park regulations regarding dogs. Sometimes referred to by the acronym “BSP.”

Example: “Riley hiked the whole way, except Baxter and the Smokies.”

Fun Fact: Baxter State Park is named for Percival P. Baxter, former governor of Maine and one of 28 donors who provided the land for what became Baxter State Park.
