Introduction and My Triple Crown Journey

My non-hiker name is Rachael, but please call me Rabbit. I am a long-distance hiker embarking this year on my third thru-hike to complete my triple crown.

It seems like a very long time ago now, but just back in 2016 I was still living a “regular” life in New York City. I had a corporate event planning job and everything was going according to plan after I graduated college. But… I was completely miserable. That is when I decided to make a major change.

Triple Crown Hikes

In April 2016 I started my thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail and fell in love. It wasn’t easy, to say the least. I encountered more physical and emotional challenges than I expected. But through it all, I knew I was in the right place. After I summited Katahdin I knew I had to keep going.

So in April 2017 I started the Pacific Crest Trail. This trail felt so different but also the same. Like starting work at a new company but doing the same job. I faced new challenges hiking in a very high snow year. I hiked for miles through snow for the first time. I got swept down a creek and started to doubt myself. Then I made a plan (a miniature flip-flop of sorts) and I pushed on to complete the trail. It was all worth it.

Now… you guessed it, the Continental Divide Trail! In a few short weeks I will be embarking on the thru-hike that will complete my triple crown in three years. I expect more challenges than I faced on either trail before. I can’t wait to be out there again. This time I am trying to focus on incorporating yoga into my hiking. Connecting my mind and body instead of just ignoring all the pain (as best I can).

Other stuff

Congratulations on the AT and the PCT and I pray you will have good fortune on what I deem as the most beautiful and exciting trail of the triple crown, the CDT. Having lived in Colorado and experienced the Rockies, I have to say they are by far my favorite mountain range. I look forward to following you on the pod casts.

How have you supported yourself for these “adventures” after giving up your corporate career? Searching for ways to convince my wife that it’s doable. She’s very logical and ‘earthbound’ while I’m more idealistic and adventurous dreamer. I’m thinking I’ll just have to wait till our kids are out of college and more out on their own but, I have the Triple Crown plans in my future sights. In itching agony till I can begin pursuing that goal. Good luck!
