Stories from the Trail: Tyler “Hiking Prodigy” Lau, First Person of Color to Hike Calendar Triple Crown

Raising Awareness Triple Crown Style

Some trail names demand a backstory, while others need no explanation. When you meet someone called Billy Goat or Legend, for instance, it’s safe to assume they’ve hiked many miles. Hiking Prodigy is a safe bet as well. The safest, really.  Tyler Lau recently completed the astonishing physical and mental challenge known as the Calendar Year Triple Crown, becoming the tenth person ever to do it, and the first person of color to boot.

As you may know, each week The Trek hosts an online Hiker Hangout which we record and present in podcast form as Stories From The Trail. In this week’s get together, Tyler joins us to talk about his amazing accomplishment, gear, logistics, and loneliness, and of course, nutrition. Followed by a good poop story. Listen wherever you get great podcasts, or right here.

If you’d like to participate in one of our live Hiker Hangouts, we meet (and record) Wednesdays at 7 p.m. Eastern. Happy Trails!
