Why?

The seed was planted for this trek in 2021 when we camped in Grand Marais and day hiked at Devil’s Kettle. What is this Superior Hiking Trail and why didn’t I know about it? Roughly 310 miles of north shore bliss? Plus bat size mosquitoes but we won’t go there yet.  Can I hike the whole trail in the next year? Actually if I am really honest about seed planting, it was a book by Cheryl Strayed called Wild that got the wheels turning years ago. These factors along with the timing of turning 50 this year and the difficult loss of my mom to cancer in December fueled my need for a distraction.

So, I spent the remainder of winter researching gear, trails, spurs, and immersing myself in all things survival.  This distraction provided intermittent relief from the blanket of grief that was heavy most days and helped fight insomnia with middle of night you tubes such as “how to pack your backpack and not fall over backward from the weight” tidbits n such.

In the past few weeks we were camping with different groups of friends and this upcoming hiking trip came up. Most folks asked “WHY?” are you doing this, not “WOW” that’s awesome ! This consensus hit me the night before departure as pre-hike jitters were setting in and I asked my husband John who was accompanying me (sucker!) if it was our age that made folks pause or the overall craziness of the trek itself. We cannot be sure but I guess the answer I come back with was “why NOT?”.
