Woman Rescued After Falling Headfirst Into Pit Toilet Trying to Retrieve Phone

A woman dropped her phone while using it in an outhouse, fell into the toilet while trying to retrieve it, and had to be rescued by firefighters in Washington’s Olympic National Forest last Thursday.

The incident took place in a pit toilet atop Mount Walker, a popular Olympic Peninsula hiking area that also has vehicle access to the summit.

As initially reported by the Kitsap Sun, Brinnon Fire Department Chief Tim Manly described the woman initially disassembling the toilet seat and using dog leashes to try to fish out her phone from where it had landed in the waste matter below. When that didn’t work, she tied herself to the dog leashes to try to reach for it.

“They didn’t work very well and in she went,” headfirst, said Manly.

She tried to escape for 10-15 minutes before calling 911. Firefighters passed her blocks that she stood on to reach a harness that they used to pull her out.

She was washed down, uninjured, and “was strongly encouraged to seek medical attention after being exposed to human waste, but she only wanted to leave,” the department said in a Facebook post.

“This was pretty unique…I’ve been doing this for 40 years, and that was a first,” said Manly of the nightmarish situation.

She had amazing presence of mind to grab and hang onto her phone. If she’d lost it and been unable to call for help … well, what a way to go.
