Lydia Armstrong

Well, hi there! I'm Lydia, an aspiring thru hiker testing her luck on the PCT beginning April 19, 2016. I like to think of myself as an outdoor enthusiast with a decent sized vocabulary, but I'm sure I'll prove both of those things at least slightly untrue at some point along this journey. My hobbies include making myself look like an idiot, laughing way too often, correcting the grammar of NY Times Bestselling novels, and eating way too much food in a single sitting. I've been itching to trade in my sparkly work flats for muddy hiking boots for over a year now & I cannot wait to get out there! Feel free to check out some of my other shenanigans over at www.outsideandaliive.com

Procrastination Level: All Time High

Procrastination Level: All Time High

48 hours (er well, if we're being technical it's closer to 36 hours) means crunch time. What's left to do? Other than give my mom her entire house back, not a whole lot. It sounds like my last few hours will be spent cleaning and clearing the makings of a thru hike out of the living room and moving it instead to my pseudo-bedroom for the next 6 months. Here goes nothing!

The Method to the Madness

One of the most common questions I still get asked in regards to my hike is simply WHY. Well, allow me to elaborate.

Bears: Fear vs Respect

Bears: Fear vs Respect

There's no question that bears have the ability to kill a person with one fowl swoop of their paws. Is it weird that I'm still not afraid of them?

Why Do You Hike?

Why Do You Hike?

Mother Nature doesn’t care what I’m wearing or how my hair looks when I’m outside. She doesn’t care whether or not I’m wearing makeup and she doesn’t even care if I’m properly prepared, all that she cares about is that I’ve paid her an always-welcome visit.

Deciding to attempt a Thru Hike

Deciding to attempt a Thru Hike

What is thru hiking and how does someone decide to attempt what so many people refer to as crazy? It's a dash of childlike wonder, a spoonful of courage, a sprinkle of big dreams, a pinch of amazement, and a handful of, you guessed it, crazy.
