My first thru-hike was the Colorado Trail in 2019. It spurred further adventures such as the South Dakota Centennial Trail and an attempt of the Uinta Highline Trail. Last summer I thru-hiked the AT northbound, it was an amazing experience! This summer I am reuniting with several tramily members to hike the PCT northbound, starting in the first half of April. My AT spirit animal was the Eastern Red-Spotted Newt, what will it be on the PCT?

The Oregon Border
We proceeded as a group to the Oregon border. Yay, a new state, it only took two months!
Road Walk: Castella to Etna
The trail provided… While we set up four tents in the front yard, Kelsey & Shay brought out five camp chairs, a surge protector for charging, and a table where they laid out taco fixings and beers.
Bats, Deer, & Bears
We watched bats stream out of the derelict pit toilet to hunt insects, darting back and forth above the creek water.
Lassen Volcanic Park to Burney Falls
Lassen Peak appeared in the distance, looking gorgeous with snow coated slopes. A pair of Canadian geese swam on a lake overflowing with snow-melt.
Travel Days
At the airport, I rented a car for the first time! It was a grey Honda Civic. The route Google suggested brought familiar sights.
Completing Southern California
At the highway, Karin and I finished the Southern California section of the PCT, 653 miles from Campo to Walker Pass!
Big Bear… Finally!
The day started amidst pine trees and I felt peaceful, a strong sense of home. I observed three deer and a quail bobbing its head. The only sounds were birdsong and my footsteps. Gradually Big Bear Lake appeared in the distance.
An Impressive Road Walk
I’m glad we did the road walk. As one hiker told us, you can always climb the mountain, seeing the road carnage is a rare occurrence.
Rainy Day Nachos
It was a wet day. At one point, the rain let up for 30-45 minutes and I dug a cat-hole.
Lizard Vibing
It became one of my favorite days on trail when I came across a long-nosed leopard lizard sunning on a rock.
