REI Outlet is your ticket to quality backpacking gear at an affordable price. Summer is in full swing, and REI is celebrating with a big old sale: now through July 24, you can save up to 70 percent (70 percent!) on handpicked gear from REI Outlet. We combed through the offerings so you don’t have to, and these are our favorite deals for backpackers and hikers.
Best Handpicked Deals From the REI Outlet Sale
Sale $59.73 (Reg. $199.95)
- Weight: 16.6 oz (pair)
- Collapsed length: 22.4 in
These sturdy three-section poles telescope to a maximum length of 47 inches but collapse down to just 22 inches when you don’t need them. Made with ultralight carbon fiber, foam grips, and rigid anodized aluminum locking mechanisms, these poles will (hopefully) keep you from faceplanting and take pressure off your joints as you hike.
70 % Off OllyDog Rover Dog Pack
Sale $29.73 (Reg. $90)
- Weight: 14.4 – 18 oz
- Gear capacity: 8 – 10L
This dog pack is at least as nice as your own backpack, if not nicer. Be jealous. It has five different adjustable attachment points to keep the pack from slipping or bouncing, even when your pup is at maximum stoke and frolicking all over the place. All the straps are padded, and it has a soft handle on top so you can lift your dog briefcase-style over blowdowns and other obstacles.
Sale $119.73 (Reg. $200)
- Weight: 43 oz
- Comfort rating: 37 degrees
The Lamina 30 is remarkably light for a synthetic bag, especially considering it fits hikers up to 78 inches tall. It’s made with 80 percent recycled polyester insulation, a ripstop nylon outer shell, and a buttery-soft polyester taffeta lining. As is typical for Mountain Hardwear, the design is thoughtful but straightforward, with two-way zippers, a shaped draft color, and a tailored hood and footbox.
Sale $44.73 (Reg. $150)
- Weight: 16.2 oz
- Heel-to-toe drop: 6mm
Erm, a pair of ultralight, thru-hiker-approved trail runners for just 45 dollars? Hello, incredible deal. Seriously, this might be the best deal on the entire list. Shoes are expensive, and avid backpackers and runners can burn through four or five pairs in a busy year. Getting a few pairs at less than a third of the list price could do wonders for your pizza budget.
35% Off Gregory Deva 70 Women’s Backpack
Sale $213.73 (Reg. $329.95)
- Weight: 79.2 oz (medium)
- Materials: Nylon, polyester, EVA open-cell foam, aluminum internal frame
Yeah, maybe it’s not the lightest backpack on the planet, but the Deva is a great load-hauler. With a whopping 74-liter capacity in the size medium, this backpack is up to even the most rugged, remote, resupply-less expedition. It has ample padding, and you can access your gear not just from the top of the back but also from the front panel and the bottom sleeping bag compartment.
The removable hydration sleeve also converts into a lightweight daypack for all your side quest and slackpacking needs, so if you think about it, you’re kind of getting two packs for (35 percent less than) the price of one.
Sale $102.73 (Reg. $159.95)
- Weight: 79 oz
- Floor area: 36 sq ft
The Upland’s color-coded three-pole design is easy and intuitive to set up. Combine that with the tent’s spacious dimensions, sturdy construction, and thoughtful design (it even has a lovely vent in the rainfly to reduce condensation buildup!), and you’ve got yourself an excellent beginner backpacking tent for a very reasonable price.
And unlike many cramped ultralight tents, the Upland is a true two-person shelter, so you can split the load with your hiking partner to keep the weight penalty manageable.
Sale $57.73 (Reg. $145)
- Weight: 25 oz
- R-value: 3.8
This beginner-friendly pad is sturdy, warm, and easy to use. Its R-value (3.8) makes it appropriate for three-season use, and the fact that it’s self-inflating is a game-changer. You get to not hyperventilate, and the inside of the pad doesn’t turn into a petri dish from blowing moist breath into it each night. Win-win.
But our favorite feature is the silicone print added to the 30-denier ripstop polyester material; this grippy, non-slip detail will save you from sliding around the floor of your tent overnight like it’s the world’s most boring slip ‘n’ slide (IYKYK).
Sale $78.73 (Reg. $199.95)
- Weight: 59 oz
- Materials: 600-denier polyester, 75-denier circle mesh, PE/PU foam, 210-denier nylon, HDPE frame sheet and aluminum stays
A full-featured, 60L backpack that weighs less than four pounds? That’s honestly pretty dang impressive. The Lookout has ample foam padding, a bottom sleeping bag compartment, a floading top lid, and a side-panel zipper so you can easily access your gear without unloading the whole pack.
If you’re torn between durability/features and weight savings, this is the pack for you (and you could always ditch the removable brain to shave a few ounces if desired).
Sale $21.73 (Reg. $79.95)
- Weight: 16 oz
- Dimensions: 0 x 39 x 15 in
Don’t laugh at us, thru-hikers! You already have overnight gear, so you’re not the ones who would benefit most from the Mountain Pod. That honor belongs to the day hikers who, if things take a turn for the worse, would otherwise be unprepared to weather a harsh storm or a night in the mountains. It packs down small, sets up quick, and at just a pound, won’t weigh you down on your forest-bathing, peak-bagging, day-tripping adventures.
There’s a reason adequate shelter is one of the Ten Hiking Essentials, so put this at the bottom of your day pack and let it live there. Even a seemingly short and straightforward hike can go pear-shaped when you least expect it; this way, you’ll be ready no matter what.
69% Off Men’s prAna Brion Shorts
Sale $20.73 (Reg. $69)
- Weight: 9 oz
- Materials: 97% nylon, 3% spandex
These classic hiking/climbing shorts have five ventilated mesh pockets, a fixed belt, and just enough stretch to give them a full range of functional movement.
The REI Outlet Sale runs 7/14 – 7/24, but by the very nature of the Outlet, supplies are limited. Shop early to get the best selection. Head over to REI Outlet now to browse the sale.
