Postponed, Not Cancelled

I should be a week into my journey on the AZT, but I’m not.  I’m sitting at home waiting for a biopsy later this month.  Several months ago, I had an MRI and it showed a small spot on my prostate.  I have a family history of prostate cancer, both my father and a younger brother had it. The good news is that should it in fact be cancer, it is very treatable if caught in the early stages.  I’ve been having my PSA analysis and digital exam for years as a precaution. Last fall my PSA jumped more than normal, but the initial thought was that a 4,000-mile bike ride and a COVID booster a couple of days before the blood draw may have been the reason.  But a second PSA and the MRI said otherwise.

So, long story short, I’m having to delay my AZT journey.  This really bums me out – it looks like an epic year for a spring NOBO.  Additionally, I’m not getting the chance to hike with my fellow Class of 1977 PCT member Jay-Z, something I was really looking forward to too.  At this point, I’m not sure if I’ll be doing the AZT this fall or having to wait until next spring, the biopsy will dictate that.  But now more than ever I want to do this trail.

My buddy Jay-Z. Wish I was out there with him.

I’ve got two big takeaways from the last few months that I want to share.  1) Dudes over 50.  Get into the habit of having a prostate exam.  The first couple of times is embarrassing, but I’m finding that as I get older, you get used to losing your dignity. 2) Don’t wait until it is too late if you want to do a big hike or bike tour.  Retire early and do it.  I retired at 59 and have since done the AT, CT, TRT, and TransAmerica.  Did I cost myself some significant earnings?  Sure, but it was worth it.  Don’t let the almighty dollar get into the way of your bucket list.
