Pacific Crest Trail Hiker Rescued by Shasta County Search and Rescue

Deputies from the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office – Burney Station were dispatched on Monday, August 21, 2023, around 6:15 p.m., to aid a hiker in need along the Pacific Crest Trail. The alert originated from the hiker’s Garmin Inreach SOS feature.

The hiker, a 78-year-old female hiking the trail for over 40 days, communicated her potential hypothermia due to persistently wet conditions following recent rains. Deputies established contact through her GPS communicator. Despite attempting to reach her on Summit Lake Road according to GPS coordinates, road conditions thwarted their efforts.

Around 2 a.m., the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Jeep Team located the hiker. A medical evaluation confirmed her well-being, and she was transported to a nearby hotel as per her request.
