30 Reasons Why Crocs Are The Perfect Hiking/ Trail Shoe

Views in the post are not solely mine and have been proven with thousands of miles/ kilometers of hiking, running, walking, and everything in between. Remember, if it can be done, it can be done in Crocs. I will be hiking the Appalachian Trail in these and encourage all to do the same.

A little background, I have been wearing this pod protection since high school (I am 37). My first pair was a red pair of clown shoes and then moved to brown ones for style of course. I have hiked Mt. Fuji to diving with them on (I wouldn’t recommend the latter, they float).  There is a small contingent of diehard Croc wearers in the world and I am here just to spread the gospel of the majestical Crocs. I am not an affiliate of Crocs and get paid nothing by them (cough cough hey Crocs).

Reasons Why Crocs Are The Perfect Hiking/ Trail Shoe

  1. Weight: Most Crocs are made from a light, foam-like material, making them easy to carry and wear. You can pack them easily and they will still hold shape. You could put a carabiner on them and hook them on your pack if need be.
  2. Comfort: Not sure why I didn’t put this one but the soft material and roomy design provide comfort for long walks and some say it is like walking on clouds.
  3. Breathable: The ventilation holes allow air to circulate, keeping your feet cool and dryish. Though I do have a winter pair that closes those holes up and keeps your feet dry boom another reason in a reason.
  4. Water-resistant: Crocs can handle wet conditions and dry quickly.
  5. Floatability: Walking across a stream, swimming in the ocean boom one slips off in sport mode, no problem. They float and are easily retrieved.
  6. Easy to Clean: Mud and dirt can be easily rinsed off with just water, not many trail shoes can say that.

  7. Perfect for Mountainbeering: If you spill your beverage no biggie, need a cozy, boom. Crocs provided it all for having a beverage atop a peak.
  8. Durable: The material is tough and can withstand mean comments, rough terrain, water, you name they can take it.
  9. Affordable: Crocs are generally cheaper than specialized hiking shoes, and if you are color/ pattern indifferent you have tons of options.
  10. Versatile: They can be used for casual walks, crushing peaks, running 5ks, you get the idea.
  11. Slip-Resistant: The soles provide decent traction on various surfaces, but choose your bottom with care. I have different Crocs for different surfaces, but when in doubt the classic Crocs covers it all.
  12. Flipability: One falls off or you take them off and it slides down a hill, never fear. Crocs always land on the right side, the opposite of toast.
  13. Quick to Put On and Take Off: Convenient for situations where you need to remove your shoes frequently (it will take a slightly bit longer in 4XD).
  14. Sport Mode/ 4XD: This option is on all Crocs and comes in different names, I prefer 4WD. Just pop down the back and you are ready to rock.
  15. Odor-Resistant: The material doesn’t absorb odors easily (most of the time).
  16. Shock Absorption: Provides some cushioning against impacts on the bottom and top.

  17. Variety of Styles: Available in various colors and designs to suit personal preferences, but brighter is always better.
  18. Adjustable Strap: Some pairs even have a heel strap that can be adjusted for those with funky feet (not the classics though).
  19. Room for Socks: Can be worn with or without socks, depending on the weather and personal comfort. I do recommend it for the winter, can even get a pair of waterproof socks, which I have done before.
  20.  Ninja Abilities/ Non-Marking Soles: Won’t leave scuff marks on indoor surfaces.
  21.  Perfect for Water Crossings: Ideal for trails with streams or rivers and even a creek.
  22.  Allergy-Friendly: Made from non-toxic materials, so when your doggo decides he’s hungry because they look so good, it doesn’t kill them (I hope not).
  23. Recyclable: Some Crocs are made from recyclable materials, making them an eco-friendly option. They are getting better with this stoked.
  24. Packable: Easily squished down to fit in a backpack or luggage and won’t be damaged.

  25. Wide Toe Box: Provides ample room for toe movement, reducing the risk of blisters and discomfort. Also if your feet swell from long distances, boom, get a size up.
  26. Customizable: With Jibbitz charms, hikers can personalize their Crocs for a unique look. I have not dabbled in this yet and am a Crocs purest so I cannot attest to the functionality of them and the boost in athleticism. But from what I heard it is around a 1.5% to 4.7% boost in speed.
  27. Low Maintenance: Unlike leather or fabric shoes, they don’t require special care or treatment. But when the bottoms go beware can be slippery as.
  28. Massage-like Footbed: The textured footbed can provide a massage-like feel, which can be soothing like little elves massaging your feet.
  29. They Are Vegan- No animals were harmed in the makings.
  30. Suitable for Campsite Use: Perfect for wearing around the campsites if you don’t wear them all day. Don’t worry you will get there.

How to Choose a Pair of Crocs

Now that you have come to your senses, which pair do you choose? When choosing a pair of Crocs for hiking, it’s important to consider several factors to ensure comfort and safety on the trail.

First, look for a model with a more rugged sole, such as the Crocs All-Terrain or Offroad Sport Clog, which offers better traction and durability for uneven surfaces. Ensure that the fit is snug but comfortable, with enough room for your toes to move freely without rubbing against the shoe. The heel strap is a personal preference but should fit securely to prevent the Crocs from slipping off while walking.

Additionally, consider the ventilation holes, while they provide breathability, they might also allow debris to enter, so choose a design that balances airflow and protection (seasons and weather matter).  If you plan to hike in wet conditions, opt for Crocs made with Croslite foam, as they are quick-drying and water-resistant.

Lastly, think about the type of socks (I am not a big socks guy and usually only wear them in winter) you’ll wear with your Crocs, as this can affect the overall fit and comfort during your hike. By taking these factors into account, you can select a pair of Crocs that will provide a comfortable and enjoyable hiking experience.

It’s not worth mentioning (but I know some keyboard warriors will whinge) that while Crocs offer a plethora of advantages, they may not provide the ankle support, sole rigidity, and protection that are typically needed for more strenuous hikes or rough terrain. Always consider the nature of your hike and your personal needs when choosing hiking footwear.

Never found a model 4XD anywhere, what is its real designation?

Hahaha, there is no real word for it. It is a play on words and means 4-wheel drive or sport mode. I don’t use that mode often but it is helpful and each shoe is different in its ability to crush peaks. Thanks for reading.

Love it, only reason I switched to Crocs was the toe protection, had a few nasty crushing of the toes. Thanks for reading and the insight.

Definitely the best thru-hiking shoe on the market and general best shoe in the world. I’ve used the offroad/all-terrain Crocs for over 17,000 miles of thru hikes and I recently ran my first marathon in Antarctica in Crocs. And it all started on the AT for me. The hardest part is trying to relate to other hikers when they complain about foot pain but you walk on clouds all day.
