Having a winter break is arguably the best (only?) good thing about being a college student again. And the best part of winter break? Getting to spend three weeks with this good boy. ——— Shooter motivates me to get up early, get out, and move even on days I’d rather not. His boundless joy is contagious as I follow his furry butt down a trail and through the woods. A five-minute cuddle fest in the morning makes any day bearable. He single-handedly helped me get through the saddest winter I’ve ever experienced two years ago. Hike 34 began as hike 33 had ended … in pouring rain. Even the dogs didn’t want to leave the shelter. It rained so hard overnight, that we put our tent inside the shelter. That is considered bad camping etiquette, but since no others were staying in the campsite, we took the space. Day 151 // 21.1 // 2121.9 Today was big…. we’ve been telling people we’re walking to Georgia since July and guess what?! HERE WE ARE! ?????? It’s crazy to think this is the last state we’re entering. Recently found a picture of the first time I set foot on the AT! In 2004, my Floridian family was on spring break at my grandparents’ house in Southwest Virginia. It was unusually cold for April, and it was snowing slightly but not accumulating in Draper. My parents wanted to give us our first chance to play in the snow, so they looked up nearby areas at higher elevation. We got in the car and drove to the Grayson Highlands, stopping when the snow was about 4 inches deep. We pulled off the road and played for an hour, throwing snowballs and making snow angels, all things we had only seen on TV living in Florida. No one else was around, but then a few bearded men with backpacks walked randomly out of the forest. They were AT thru-hikers, completely taken by surprise by so much snow in April in Virginia. That’s when we realized we were on the Appalachian Trail. It was the first time I ever heard of it. Now I know we were at Elk Garden, where the trail crosses a road between Whitetop Mountain and Mount Rogers, the two highest mountains in Virginia. Hi, I'm Becky. I thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2017 and write for The Trek because my friends and family are tired of hearing me talk about it. In 2019 I'll be attempting a southbound thru-hike of the PCT because I don't know how to stop.
