Yesterday I completed 10.8 miles on the OHT — as reported by the FarOut app, plus the mileage to travel from billeting back to the OHT trail.
Finding myself in an unlit no-man’s land, I was faced with the option of camping beside the road or finding a tent friendly campsite. I say tent I say tent friendly because not all campsites allow tent camping. I called a few local campsites. The first, which was highly rated on FarOut didn’t answer their phone and didn’t return my phone call.
Boyd’s, however, answered cheerfully and had a campsite available with no notice! I’ve got to say the campsite seems to be a little slice of heaven. Unfortunately, they were six or eight miles behind me, on Key West’s main island. I had a decision to make. Should I camp by the roadside, or should I return to Boyd’s? It was all already pitch black, so setting up a tent would be difficult — My best option would be cowboy camping. Tossing out my Tyvek tarp, sleeping pad, and sleeping under my down quilt.
I chose Boyd’s — and I’m happy with that decision. The other campers come from a variety of locations within the United States or across the globe.
As an added bonus, the campsite offers free range roosters and hens to keep the campsites tidy. I’ll post a picture when one comes into view.
