Pinhoti Trail: Getting Setup for Cave Spring

Day: 26

Yesterday’s Goals:

To hike seven miles to a lake/pond outside Cave Springs.

Activities of The Day:

Sleep eluded me last night. My feet and legs wanted to be messaged all night long. I finally fell asleep around three this morning, I was awake around 9:30 and hiking sometime around eleven.

The first mile was uphill and painful; my body didn’t want to participate. After getting past that first hill, life was great! The trail was wide and easy to hike on.

My clothes and body really need to be washed. I came to a ford today and sat there for forty-five minutes thinking how good it would be to lay in the creek, bath, and wash my clothes. After drinking a liter of water, I decided to carry on and crossed the creek, only getting my feet and shoes wet.

When I came to the last two miles, the trail was on private property, which is actually a horse trail; either way, the trail was very easy to pick up the pace and get some miles in. When I was in the Army, I was a Combat Engineer, and our color is Crimson Red; I was happy to see the state (Georgia), the Home of the Infantry, brought red to the trail. I doubt that has anything to do with anything, but my opinion says that’s what happened.

Red Blazes

Later on, I came to a sign that showed the direction to different places.

Direction Post

Shortly after the post, I was at the non-existent lake/pond.

End of Day Photo

After searching for water I didn’t find, I put up my tent, settled in for the night, and ate dinner. As always, my body wanted lots of attention while it relaxed.

What’s Ahead:

I plan on waking up whenever I wake up and walking the two miles to Cave Springs

Goals:

Walk into Cave Springs, take a long hot shower, and relax.
