What Have I Gotten Myself Into?

It’s the middle of the night and I’m wide awake. Tomorrow morning we set off on our Appalachian Trail thru-hike.

Emotional Roller Coaster

I must have run through every emotion possible in the last 48 hours.  Excitement – our launch day is almost here! Dread – my body is going to be so sore. Anticipation – we’re going to meet intriguing people and see wondrous sights! Frustration – why won’t all my gear fit in my pack? Disbelief – did I really agree to hike nearly 2200 miles? Awe – this is going to be the adventure of a lifetime, shared with my love and my pup.

Tonight I’ll enjoy a warm, soft bed. Tomorrow our adventure begins. Happy trails!

Today is the day! As I write this it is March 7, 2022 and you should be starting your thru-hike of the AT. I am so excited for you! I am planning on doing an AT thru-hike in 2025 and I will be 65! In addition, I am hoping to bring my pup with me, who will be 5 in 2025. I am curious if you will be filming any of the hike. There are certain sections I would love to see a dog your size get thru (I believe our pups are about the same size, my pup is about 45 pounds.). While I have seen people with smaller dogs do the hike, it is not the same as they can be picked up and carried thru rough terrain. None the less, I will be reading your posts.

Happy Hiking, and may the odds be ever in your favor!

Hi Theresa, the trail down from Blood Mountain had a few scrambles already (to my surprise!) and Bodhi had no trouble whatsoever. He’s a bit over 60 lbs. so bigger than your pup. Check out the Thru-Hiker Dogs Facebook page. They have great advice.

U R both an inspiration to me. I have been reading and studying about the AT for a few years and would love to be able to maybe do sections. We are a few years older than U2. I look forward to reading about your adventures.
